A recipe from curator and food artist Zehra Ahmed that captures the flavors of the season in a meal. A perfectly delicious gesture of care for Father’s Day (or any day).

Last month I had the pleasure of creating an edible spread of small bites for Good Bacteria’s celebration of motherhood. Hosted at the plant design studio and furniture showroom, Serpentine, in Los Angeles, the day was a beautiful convening of powerful women sharing stories of resilience and self-care.

This Sunday you can pass that care along by treating your partner to a seasonal Father’s Day frittata straight from the farm. I’m a regular at the Atwater Farmers Market in Los Angeles and I always pick up fresh produce, sprouts or micro greens, and freshly squeezed orange juice for an easy weekend meal. It’s also stone fruit season here in Los Angeles so we have insanely delicious apricots, white peaches and plums ripe for the picking. Don’t forget a loaf of freshly baked bread of your choice and some good butter!

Below is a simple, flavor-packed frittata recipe you can use to get the best from seasonal produce. As a curator and food artist I love using sprouts or microgreens for both their beauty and their concentrated nutrients. I’ve included a short guide to healing properties in sprouts and microgreens for when you come across these at your local market!

Zehra’s Father’s Day (Or Any Day) Frittata

Perfect for 2 or 3 people

You’ll Need:
  • 10” skillet that can go into an oven
  • 6 eggs
  • ¼ cup Milk or Water
  • ½ Onion or 2 Shallots, finely chopped
  • 2 cups of your fav farmers market vegetables, chopped
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Olive oil

Optional:

  • Cheese for toppings (Depending on my vegetables, I pick between goat, feta or parmesan)
  • Garlic cloves, minced
  • Paprika
  • Aleppo pepper
  • Herbs of any kind
Preparation:
  1. Add oil to your skillet and saute your choice of onion with some salt and pepper (till translucent)

  2. Sautee your vegetables until cooked through.

  3. Set aside to cool.

  4. Beat your eggs until frothy, add water and beat a little more.

  5. Add salt and pepper. (If you are adding spices or herbs, do it now too)

  6. Fold in your vegetable and onion mix, and pour the mixture into the pan.

  7. Cook the eggs undisturbed for about 10 minutes or until barely set.

  8. Sprinkle cheese on top (if using)

  9. Pop the pan under the broiler for 1-2 minutes depending on the intensity of your broiler - keep an eye on this because you do not want to char your frittata.

  10. Sprinkle with sprouts or microgreens of your choice.

Serve warm with fresh bread. Get some delicious butter for your bread and maybe a splash of bubbles for fresh squeezed orange juice.

End the meal with fresh fruit topped with whipped coconut cream and/or ice cream – it feels fun and decadent! Make sure it's all well chilled.
